Fletcher's Journey

Fletcher at 14 Weeks Fletcher today

Fletcher was born with a mild heart murmur and at 16 weeks the murmur worsened to a Grade 4 (Grade 1 is mild and Grade 6 is serious). Without hesitation I went to see a cardiac specialist and at 19 weeks he underwent an operation for Pulnomic Stenosis. Fletcher's pulmonary valve did not open fully at birth and needed a little help by inserting a balloon through it and filling it with fluid. This is quite common in Mini Schnauzers and 8 other breeds.

The operation was a success however only a few weeks later we discovered that the valve had become inflamed and partially sealed back up. Fletcher underwent a second operation 2 weeks ago and fingers crossed that the additional medication has enabled his valve to remain open.

Having never had a dog prior to Fletcher, this journey has been very hard on puppy and owner. I have to believe however that things happen for a reason and I think it is true that you should not get the dog you want but rather the dog you need. Fletcher has been such a trooper through all the operations and medications, and has shown me a fighting spirit when the chips are really down. There was always something special about him and he has truly touched everyone that has met him. He truly deserves a long and happy life and I'm glad I have been able to offer him a chance at one.

I find out the results of the second operation tomorrow.
