Dogs have a natural instinct to potty away from their nest. This is first evident from the time they are first able to stagger around on their little legs at about 2 weeks of age. We set up our puppies for success with potty training from this early age by providing them with a potty area distinct from their bedding in the small whelping box they were born in. We use a patch of artificial turf overlaying puppy pads. As they grow older and start eating solids we provide them with more space and an artificial turf toilet area away from where they eat, sleep and drink. This includes access to an outside area where there is more artificial turf pieces placed in the corners of the yard.
By the time the puppies are around 6 weeks old they are reliably pottying outside, mostly on the turf. At this point we put surfaces we do NOT want them to associate with toileting in their eating, sleeping and drinking area. This includes pieces of carpet, tiling and timber floorboard. This conditioning sets them up to see such surfaces as “non-potty” areas, helping to make potty training much easier for you and your puppy when you take it home. We even provide you with a piece of artificial turf to take home with you.
If you buy your next puppy from a breeder who does not put in this preparation, the puppy can become conditioned to no longer discriminate between potty and non-potty surfaces. For example, many breeders will rear puppies on newspaper or blankets and have their bed, feed, water and potty areas all mixed together. This serves to blunt their natural instinct to potty away from their den. We instead work with this natural instinct, reinforcing it and making the job of potty training infinitely easier.
Puppies that were not started correctly will be more difficult to potty train for the rest of their lives. Potty training failure is a major cause of dissatisfaction by dog owners. While they may endure such behavior for years, an event that puts pressure on the situation, such as bringing a new baby in to the family, may lead to the dog being surrendered for euthanasia.
It’s important to note that NO puppy is fully potty trained by 8 to 9 weeks of age! While our puppies are trained to potty reliably in the right place in our home environment, they need to learn the “lay of the land” at yours before they even understand where the toilet is, and how to get to it. You will need to be vigilant to avoid accidents, and ensure you help your puppy get to the toilet area regularly through the day. We provide full advice on this but just be aware that work will be required of you to ensure success. The fewer mistakes you let your puppy make at this stage, the easier the whole process will be!
The most obvious benefit of owning a potty trained Miniature Schnauzer puppy is that it makes it much easier for you to complete potty training. The chance of messy accidents is greatly reduced and the puppy “gets it” faster. Potty training can be a challenging task, and with a puppy that has been reared to potty in appropriate places, you will have less stress and enjoy more of the fun parts of pet ownership.
We have Miniature Schnauzer potty trained puppies regularly through the year. Our puppies are raised in a loving and nurturing environment and have been socialized with people and other pets.
All of our puppies not only have had their potty training off to a good start, but also come with a LIFETIME genetic health guarantee, up-to-date vaccinations, worming and microchipping. They have had their dewclaws done to prevent future painful accidents, and been exposed to clipping, bathing, grooming and toenail trimming to make future grooming hassle free. We temperament test our puppies and match them with their best fit homes so you get a puppy whose behavior is compatible with your family. We also offer ongoing support and advice for the life of your dog. And for excellent advice for new owners, grab Dr Ian Dunbar’s puppy potty training guide.
